But my best friend Tori sent it to me in an email and I am SOO grateful!

Transgender Day of Remembrance and TransAction!

GLSEN stands in solidarity with the 10th annual Transgender Day of Remembrance (TDOR) (www.rememberingourdead.org) and encourages students to commemorate transgender people who have lost their lives due to anti-transgender hatred or prejudice. The official TDOR is November 20 and students are encouraged to do any of the following or more:

  • Candlelight vigils / marches
  • Visual representation of the number of deaths with:
  • Cardboard tomb stones of remembered people
  • Paper cutouts of remembered people
  • Body outline chalkings of remembered people
  • Art / photography displays
  • TransAction! - Friday, February 27, 2009

GLSEN is proud to be sponsoring a new national day of action: TransAction! This is a day for education and celebration of transgender and gender non-conforming people and experiences. A day to begin having dialogues about gender and to advocate for inclusive schools for all regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity/expression.

TransAction! encourages students to organize a workshop, panel discussion, or similar forum about gender, gender identity gender roles, and the broader transgender umbrella.

Check back for our list of trans warriors to celebrate, a list of key terms and links to other organizations doing amazing work for the rights of transgender and gender non-conforming people.

You are encouraged to incorporate one or more of the following aspects in your action:

    Educate:

  • Reach out to organizations/community leaders who can help you organize a forum or a workshop.
  • Facilitate a workshop on gender identity and the transgender experience.
  • Get familiar with key terms about gender.
  • Create Awareness:

  • In addition to highlighting various aspects of gender and transgender experiences make sure that you celebrate the contributions transgender people have made in social justice movements.
  •

    Yours Truly,

    Ryan David
